National Park, in all about 18. 76 acres (7. 59 hectares).
Description
Introduction
The sale represents a genuinely unique opportunity to purchase one of “The Big
Three” limestone crags in the Yorkshire Dales National Park. The overhanging
cliff, formed by the force of The Wharfedale Glacier thousands of years ago,
is awe inspiring and internationally recognised. The sale extends to about
18. 76 acres (7. 59 hectares) of crag, limestone and upland calcareous grassland
pasture.
The Crag stands at 170 ft in height with an overhang of 40ft, and is a popular
tourist attraction with great accessibility from the B6160 adjacent. The cliff
and land is teeming with rare flora and fauna contributing to its Site of
Special Scientific Interest (sssi) and Limestone Pavement Order designation.
At the foot of the Crag is a sheltered area and small stream, which opens out
towards the North, yet still in the shadow of the cliff. Between White Beck
and the Crag is an area of tussocky grass and reeds providing sanctuary for a
range of habitats and species, where the cliff face flattens there is a
mixture of grass and scree, with naturally regenerated trees and shrubs.
The land is host to a range of red list flora and fauna with obvious potential
for biodiversity enhancement. The land has been subject to management
prescriptions suited to its need through Agri - Environment Schemes over the
last 20 years. There is significant potential for further enhancement and
protection of this area of the Malham - Arncliffe sssi.
The sale offers significant amenity, biodiversity, and environmental
opportunities.
Kilnsey Crag is the backdrop and natural amphitheatre to the famous Kilnsey
Agricultural Show, which happens on the Tuesday after the Summer Bank Holiday
every year. A highlight of the event is the British Open Fell Running
Association fell race. This attracts competitors from across the country with
the highlight being the decent of the ‘chimney’, a steep crevice of rock in
the crag face.
Kilnsey Crag is internationally recognised amongst the rock climbing community
as one of the most iconic and challenging climbs to be conquered.
