Additional Info
Broome Cottage is an old cottage that has been extended, it is believed,
mainly in the 19th century. In the church in Betchworth there is a map dated
around 1630 which shows a house on the site that corresponds to the front part
of the present house. The oldest part of the house is the beamed are at the
front of the house on two floors with a cellar below and an attic above.
A house of that size in the 17th century was meant for someone of standing and
in 1634 there is a record that the house and 20 acres of land were occupied by
John Buggs who was the Beadle (magistrate/policeman). The various extensions
at the rear seem to have been made in the early to mid - 19th century and one
(the Drawing room) in the Edwardian era.
