Barrow in Furness
Barrow is a thriving town with a population of around 67, 500, situated on the
tip of the Furness Peninsular, with a coastline onto the Irish Sea and
Morcambe Bay.
The principal local employer is BAE Systems Marine, who have a worldwide
reputation for the design and build of Nuclear Submarines for the Royal Navy
and there are many supporting, and other, businesses in the district.
The area is well served for sporting activities including an excellent sailing
club on Roa Island, a Golf Club, Riding Club Fishing etc. etc. Leisure
activities include the South Lakes Safari Zoo at Dalton, Furness Abbey, Piel
Island ( which even has its own "King"), Walney Island Nature Reserve and the
wonderful Lake District National Park ( Recently declared a unesco site of
outstanding natural beauty) which can be reached within 20 minutes or so.
Junction 36 of the M6 can be reached in 40 minutes or so, a train journey to
London Euston can be accomplished in about 3hrs and 30 minutes and there is a
direct train service to Manchester Airport for those wanting to jet away to
the sunshine.
